Kitchen remedies for colds and flu's

It's been a long, cold, wet winter in this part of the country and we are both REALLY looking forward to spring and with it the signs of new season's growth in the herb garden. Unfortunately, there are still a lot of colds and flu's going around and these are likely to linger for a while yet, so anything we can do to ease some of the discomfort is very welcome! The beauty of using herbal medicine during these times, is that so many useful ingredients are commonly found in the kitchen and can be easily prepared, as described in the following recipe:

Warming Cold and Flu Brew

2 large unsprayed/ unwaxed lemons, sliced with skin on

1 x 2.5cm piece of fresh ginger root, thinly sliced

1 TB finely chopped fresh thyme leaves or 1 rounded tsp dried thyme

700-800ml water

natural honey or herbal infused honey to taste

Place lemons, thyme and ginger in saucepan with water. Bring to boil, then simmer on low heat for 20- 30 mins (the water will reduce in volume to around 500-600ml) Strain into a mug and add 1 large tsp of preferred honey**. Enjoy!!

** Hyssop or elderflower infused honey are both wonderful used in this way

Thyme is amazing for its powerful antiviral & antimicrobial qualities. It has historically been used to ease persistent coughs and encourage expectoration of mucous.

Ginger has anti-inflammatory qualities, supports the digestive system, easing nausea, and generally helps to warm and stimulate the circulation. It is also known for having diaphoretic qualities, helping to open the pores of the skin, encouraging sweating and therefore helping to reduce a fever.

There are many variations of this recipe - you can add other common herbs such as turmeric, garlic and cinnamon, or a touch of cayenne if you can handle the heat!
